Best Hoof Forward: The 2026 PCYLA Show Recap
Another exciting livestock show in the books here at the Caswell Cooperative Extension Office with our amazing 4-Her’s! On April 24th & 25th Caswell County 4-H had 14 youth showing 20 animals at the 78th Annual Pittsylvania – Caswell Youth Livestock Show in Chatham, VA. Friday was showmanship day with our youth putting their best foot and animal forward. Caswell County did amazing in showmanship placing high in almost every class. However, our Junior Lamb showman all but swept the Junior Showmanship Lamb contest. With Peyton Dodson taking Grand Champion, Lucas Vernon Reserve and Forrest Barker 4th in the championship drive! Caleb Bolton took home 4th in the Intermediate Championship drive with his hog Fred!
Friday night had a special treat with the adult showmanship fundraising classes. Our Caswell County 4-H parents and volunteers and PCYLA board members really showed up and showed out. Congratulations to Christina McNeill for winning Grand Champion Showmanship for the adult goat show! You can really go places when you put a tie on a goat! John Satterfield, Heather Barker and Ben Satterfield also participated in the adult lamb show. Our judge Christie Gable also participated in the show but would only show Peyton’s black lamb. This was her first time showing a lamb since she is a cattle girl, and maybe her last. She won Reserve Champion and was super excited!
On Saturday youth were able to show their market and breeding stock. Caswell youth remained competitive throughout the day placing consistently in their classes. The Peewee classes were a HIT on Saturday. Our 5- 8 year olds were able to show, if you haven’t seen a Peewee show you are missing out. These youth had their biggest smiles and trotted out some animals as big as they were! The Peewee show is a great opportunity for youth to learn about livestock showing.
Saturday night we had a great turn out with many Caswell buyers in the stand to support our 4-H youth. We would like to thank all the parents, supporters, and volunteers who make this show a great experience for our 4-H youth.
