Ag Chat from 7/1/26: Pond Weed Management
From our Small Farms Agent , Anass Banna

A healthy pond is a balanced ecosystem. While ponds naturally contain some
aquatic vegetation, excessive weed growth or improper weed control can disrupt this balance and create serious problems. Too many weeds can reduce dissolved oxygen levels, contribute to fish kills, interfere with recreation, and negatively affect overall water quality.
There is no single product that controls every aquatic weed, so proper
identification is the first and most important step in developing an effective
management plan. Knowing exactly which weed you are dealing with allows you to choose the most effective control method, save money, and minimize
environmental impacts.
Successful pond weed management begins with regular monitoring. Inspect your pond throughout the growing season for changes in aquatic vegetation, water color, or fish activity. Detecting problems early makes control much easier and more effective.
When weeds or algae are observed, the next step is to accurately identify the
species. Once identified, the appropriate control strategy can be selected.
Management options may include:
Mechanical control – physically removing or cutting vegetation.
Biological control – using natural organisms, such as Triploid grass carp,
when appropriate.
Chemical control – applying labeled aquatic herbicides according to the
product label and recommended timing.
Treating weeds at the proper stage of growth, using the correct product and
application rate, greatly improves control while reducing the risk of harming fish and other aquatic life.
Recently, several pond owners have contacted the Caswell County Cooperative Extension office about aquatic weeds in their ponds. The four most common weeds identified are pictured below.
